Annual Checkups
Do I really need an annual checkup every year?
Yes. No matter how healthy you feel, you still need an annual checkup. As we age, these examinations become even more important. For many of us, it’s our best chance to speak with a doctor about topics such as bladder control issues or a recent fall.
Watch the video to see why annual checkups are important.
What’s the difference between a wellness visit and a physical exam?
It’s important to know the difference between the two basic types of annual checkups included with most Medicare Advantage plans. Usually, you can complete both screenings during the same visit.
*Not always covered by all health plans. Check your benefits or call Customer Service to see what annual checkups are covered in your plan.
**Please note: You may need to pay coinsurance. Additionally, the Part B deductible may apply if your doctor or provider performs additional tests or services during the same visit. Medicare doesn’t cover additional tests or services under this preventive benefit. Make sure to consult with your provider before any exams are performed.
What to expect in each visit
Annual wellness visit

Unlike physical exams: Medicare wellness visits include assessments, but usually not tests where the doctor physically touches you—unless you have a specific diagnosis or symptom.

- Bloodwork and physical tests to check your eyes, lungs, hearing, and more.
- Medical, social, and family history
- Risk factor review
- Discussion around chronic conditions
- Care plan for minor problems
- Age-appropriate counseling, tests, and vaccines including referrals
